Well sorta. It will fire up if you squirt some starter fluid into the carb.

I removed a bunch of cruft like brake light switches, radiator pressure sensor, et cetera. I removed the Starter Control Unit, which is a relay the Ascot uses to provide a switched ground plane to the actual starter motor relay. I also replaced the starter gear solenoid relay, relocated the coil so I could mount the sponge pod filter onto the carb, and generally tidied up some of the crustier splices on the wiring harness.

That was a good time. Anyway, while I was at it I replaced the right handlebar switches with a cheapo unit from Amazon that just gives an engine cutoff switch and starter button. I ditched the left side switches, because I'm not gonna have any lights on this thing anyway. So I'm getting there.

Carb jets are still on their way, and should arrive in a few days. Theoretically the bike should idle, since the VM38 comes stock with a #30 pilot jet, but I didn't have wherewithal to go turkey basting fuel into the carb today. I have plenty of tasks to keep me busy until the jets are here.

What's next?

  • replace the oil (its grimy)
  • rewire the engine cutoff switch to be the ignition switch (aka - delete the ignition lock)
  • see if I can remove all those wires going to the tail lights and signals. Maybe they can be reused elsewhere
